Tales From Lovecraft Middle School #1: Professor Gargoyle
Charles Gilman
Pub 9-2012, Quirk Books, $13.99
Professor Gargoyle: Tales from Lovecraft Middle School is the first book in a series of tales that brings the reader into a school that is unlike any other school. In the spirit of recycling, Lovecraft Middle School was built with pieces recycled from an old mansion that belonged to a guy with a very interesting past and a unique talent.  When Robert, the main character, finds a two-headed rat at the school, the story begins to unfold. The remnants of an unknown  past create portals which are scattered throughout the school and, through these, another dimension in a parallel universe can be accessed.
What happens to Robert and the others at the school where Professor Gargoyle teaches makes for a real page-turner. The reader will get drawn into the plot and find the book hard to put down. There is more than the fantasy world of a parallel universe in this book. The characters not only struggle with the evil doings of Professor Gargoyle, they also have to deal with each other and find solutions to their interpersonal problems in order to work together on the biggest one of all.
This middle school has more challenges than most! Each chapter in this easy to read, easy to follow, adds a new twist to the adventures. At the end of the book, there is a hint about what might happen in the next Professor Gargoyle book. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a satisfying fast read for a rainy weekend.
